Left ventricular diastolic and systolic function in normotensive obese subjects: influence of degree and duration of obesity.
1992
The present study was carried out to evaluate systolic and diastolic parameters in overweight and moderately obese, but otherwise healthy subjects, and in a lean control group, to determine whether degree and duration of obesity can influence left ventricular function. A total of 27 subjects, 17 overweight or with moderate obesity and 10 lean, healthy subjects were included. Patients were divided into three groups according to their body mass index (BMI) and to Garrow's criteria as follows: lean control group (BMI less than 25 kg.m-2); overweight subjects (BMI from 25 to 30 kg.m-2); moderately obese subjects (BMI greater than 30 less than 40 kg.m-2). Systolic and diastolic parameters were m…

Echocardiographic reference ranges for normal cardiac Doppler data: results from the NORRE Study
2015
International audience; AIMS: Reference values for Doppler parameters according to age and gender are recommended for the assessment of heart physiology, specifically for left ventricular (LV) diastolic function. In this study, we report normal reference ranges for Doppler parameters obtained in a large group of healthy volunteers. Echocardiographic data were acquired using state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound equipment following Doppler acquisition and measurement protocols approved by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 449 (mean age: 45.8 ± 13.7 years) healthy volunteers (198 men and 251 women) were enrolled at the collaborating institutions…

Is echocardiography mandatory for patients with chronic kidney disease?
2019
This study aims at evaluating the prevalence of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in a group of 319 hypertensive patients with stage 3b–4–5 chronic kidney disease (according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes classification), compared with 216 patients with essential hypertension and normal renal function. All patients underwent echocardiographic examination. Patients on stage 1–2–3a chronic kidney disease, dialysis treatment, or with previous manifestations of heart failure or other cardiovascular diseases were excluded. Patients with renal disease had significantly worse diastolic function (both considering trans-mitral flow and tissue Doppler imaging parameters). Diastolic …
Right ventricular diastolic function in post-surgical Tetralogy of Fallot patients: A pilot study to make a comparison between echocardiography and c…
2021
Background: right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction is associated with poor outcomes in Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) patients. Conversely, the influence of diastolic dysfunction in this setting is poorly known. In addition, evaluation of RV diastolic function by cardiac MRI is rarely performed.Materials and methods: twenty-four surgically treated ToF patients were enrolled in the study (54% males; median age at study: 28 (18–50) years; median age at surgery: 1.9 (0.4–8.2) years. They were studied by echocardiography to assess RV diastolic function in terms of traditional and TDI-derived parameters. At cardiac MRI, RV diastolic function was assessed by using phase-contrast analysis of flow …
Assessment of atrial diastolic function in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy by cine magnetic resonance imaging
2015
Purpose: This study was conducted to assess the role of atrial function by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) for the evaluation of diastolic physiology in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) compared to healthy controls. Materials and methods: We enrolled 23 consecutive patients affected by HCM and 43 healthy subjects as age-matched control cases (CC). CMR was performed through acquisition of cine steady-state free precession sequences using a 1.5-T scanner. Image postprocessing was carried out using Tracking Tool software. Results: Atrial volumes were significantly higher in patients with HCM compared to CC: maximum atrial volume (p = 0.007) and minimum atrial volume (p = 0.01).…

Effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on cardiac structure and function.
2022
SGLT2 inhibitors reduce cardiovascular death or hospitalization for heart failure, regardless of the presence or absence of diabetes in patients at high cardiovascular risk and in those with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). In patients with HF and preserved EF, empagliflozin also showed favorable effects mainly related to the reduction of hospitalization for heart failure. These favorable effects are beyond the reduction of glycemic levels and mainly related to beneficial hemodynamic and anti-inflammatory effects of these drugs and improved cardiac energy metabolism. In this review, we aimed to evaluate the effects of SGLT2 inhibitor on cardiac remodeling and function, w…
